India hits a major tech milestone:Union Minister launches ARM Bengaluru office to develop India’s first 2nm chip, a landmark in semiconductor growth

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently inaugurated ARM’s new semiconductor design office in Bengaluru, marking a historic milestone in India’s tech journey. This office will focus on designing next-generation 2-nanometre (nm) chips, a feat being attempted in India for the first time. Why 2nm chips matter Smaller chips pack more power in less space. According to officials, these 2nm chips will boost devices in AI, mobile computing, and high-performance systems. Thinner chips mean faster processing, better energy efficiency, and lighter products. They also hold strategic importance for national security, space, and defence applications. India’s semiconductor ambition India is shifting from assembling devices to designing and manufacturing advanced chips. The government’s India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has approved 10 major projects across six states, with total investments of ₹1.6 lakh crore. The mission itself has an outlay of ₹76,000 crore to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem. Earlier this year, in May 2025, Minister Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s first 3nm chip design centres in Noida and Bengaluru. While India has already achieved 7nm and 5nm designs, moving to 3nm and now 2nm technology marks a leap into cutting-edge innovation. A booming market and growing talent The global semiconductor market is expected to hit $1 trillion by 2030, with India’s domestic market projected at $100–110 billion. Domestic startups under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) Scheme are accelerating chip design, with 23 projects approved and 72 companies using advanced design tools. Student innovation is also on the rise. 25 institutions have taped out 28 chips, and about 278 colleges and universities are involved in semiconductor research. This growing talent pool strengthens India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and positions the nation as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
