In view of growing threats in space and satellite activities of enemy countries, the Indian government is planning to strengthen the security of its satellites. The Modi government is now preparing to build special “bodyguard satellites” that will protect Indian satellites in space and respond immediately to any suspicious activity. According to Bloomberg sources, this preparation gained momentum when in 2024, a neighboring country’s satellite passed just 1 kilometer away from ISRO’s satellite. According to the report, This satellite was at a height of 500-600 kilometers and was performing military tasks like mapping and ground surveillance. Although the two satellites did not collide, experts say this incident could be an attempt by the other country to demonstrate its power. The government is now working with startups on systems like LiDAR satellites and ground-based radar, which can identify threats in time and move satellites to safe positions. Air Marshal gave warning about space security in June Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit warned at the Surveillance and Electro Optics India Seminar in June that China’s People’s Liberation Army is rapidly increasing its space capabilities and this could become a serious threat to India’s security. 52 Special Defense Satellites will be launched in 4 years The government has decided that 52 special defense satellites will be sent to space by 2029 (in the next 4 years), all these satellites will become India’s eyes in space and will continuously monitor the Pakistan-China border. The satellites will be Artificial Intelligence (AI) based. At a height of 36,000 km, they will be able to communicate with each other. This will make it easier to send signals, messages and images to Earth. This entire mission is being conducted under the Defense Space Agency and the government has created a ‘Space-Based Surveillance Phase-3’ (SBS-3) plan for this. It has a budget of Rs 26,968 crores. The Cabinet Committee on Security approved it in October 2024. Acceleration in implementing the plan after Operation Sindoor Between May 7-10, 2025, India conducted major military operations against Jaish-e-Mohammed during Operation Sindoor. According to the Economic Times (ET) report, domestic satellites and some foreign commercial data were used during this time, but several deficiencies were revealed in real-time tracking. An official told ET, “We need to speed up our decision-making. The sooner we establish 52 satellites in space, the stronger our security will be.”
