If there’s one thing Elon Musk loves, it’s shaking up the internet. The SpaceX founder has announced a new project aimed at creating an alternative to Wikipedia. He revealed that his AI startup, xAI, is working on Grokipedia, an encyclopedia powered by its chatbot, Grok. And yes, the internet already has jokes ready. One viral comment read: “Next, acquire Reddit and rename it Grokkit.” What is Grokipedia On Tuesday, Musk announced on X (formerly Twitter) that his startup xAI is working on a direct competitor to Wikipedia. The aim, according to him, is to build something far more advanced and aligned with xAI’s bigger goal. Grokipedia will be powered by Grok, xAI’s AI assistant that Musk often describes as a rival to ChatGPT.
Since Grok is trained on web sources, including public tweets, Musk plans to use it to generate and maintain encyclopedia-style entries. Musk’s rocky history with Wikipedia Musk’s complicated relationship with Wikipedia isn’t new. Back in October 2023, he made headlines after offering the site $1 billion, but only if it agreed to change its name to “D**ipedia”* for a year. Unsurprisingly, the offer was declined. He doubled down again in 2024 when a Musk supporter reminded people of that bizarre proposal. Musk even replied, confirming: “The offer still stands.” Beyond the name-change stunt, Musk has often accused Wikipedia of bias and being influenced by “far-left activists.” He has also questioned its financial transparency, even telling people not to donate. Outlook It’s still unclear how Grokipedia will look or function compared to Wikipedia. But one thing is certain, Musk is betting on AI to reshape how we access knowledge.
Whether it truly becomes “a massive improvement” or just another one of his bold experiments remains to be seen.
