Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Qualcomm CEO Cristiano R. Amon on Saturday to discuss India’s growing role in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor manufacturing, and digital innovation.
The meeting highlighted how global tech leaders are increasingly looking to India as a major player in future technologies. India’s AI and semiconductor push During the meeting, PM Modi praised Qualcomm’s contribution to India’s technology goals, saying: Great to see Qualcomm’s commitment towards India’s semiconductor and AI missions. He added that India offers “unmatched talent and scale to build technologies that will shape our collective future.” What is Qualcomm Qualcomm is a US-based global chipmaker known for developing advanced processors and wireless technologies. Its chips power billions of smartphones worldwide, including Android and Apple devices. The company also plays a major role in 5G, AI-driven computing, and next-generation technologies like Extended Reality (XR) and smart glasses. Amon on 6G and the ‘Age of AI’ Speaking about the future of connectivity, Amon said that 6G will power the next phase of the AI revolution. “We started with 2G… 3G connected us to the Internet, 4G turned phones into computers, and 5G brought unlimited data. 6G will be the connectivity for the age of AI,” he explained in an interview with NDTV. He emphasised the need to make AI accessible to all: We should be working very hard to democratise this technology and make sure that everyone has access to it. Qualcomm’s expanding presence in India Qualcomm has operated in India for nearly two decades and is now expanding beyond mobile chipsets. The company is focusing on new technologies such as XR (Extended Reality), smart glasses, and AI-driven solutions. Amon said he always feels motivated by his discussions with the Prime Minister, noting: I’m always inspired by the Prime Minister. China’s antitrust probe into Qualcomm The meeting came just a day after China launched an antitrust investigation into Qualcomm’s acquisition of Israeli chipmaker Autotalks.
China’s State Administration for Market Regulation said the probe would examine whether Qualcomm failed to properly disclose details of the deal, potentially violating antitrust laws.
