Due to new GST rates being implemented from 22 September 2025, car prices have reached the same level as four years ago. Additionally, companies are also offering Diwali discounts. So if you are also planning to buy a new car this festive season, it’s important to take some precautions. Here we are telling you what precautions should be taken before buying a car, how to deal with car dealers, and why Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) is important before taking delivery of the car from the showroom and how it is done… First let’s understand what is PDI? PDI means Pre Delivery Inspection. This is a process where inspection facility is provided before car delivery. In this, the car’s interior, exterior, engine and all features are checked to ensure they are working properly or not. PDI is done in two ways. Why is PDI necessary, when where should it be done? PDI can help identify if there are any issues with the car. The car dealer knows beforehand what problems exist in the car and how to hide them from the customer before delivery. Therefore, PDI of the car should be done before the vehicle is registered. The PDI of the car should be done in a well-lit place. This makes it easier to inspect all parts of the car. It would be beneficial to take along an expert, mechanic, or someone knowledgeable about cars. Even if you can’t find an expert, you can do it yourself. How PDI is done? Step-1: Create a Checklist Step-2: Exterior Step-3: Interior Step-4: Engine, Odometer and Fuel Step-5: Car Documents Step-6: Take a Test Drive Step-7: Record the inspection video Only register the car in your name after checking all things. Keep an eye on the car after registration. Don’t let the car go back inside the service center. If the car needs to be sent inside, send someone else along with it. If you want to be more secure, make a video of the entire inspection. What factors to focus on after car is delivered? After purchasing a car, you should carefully check its invoice (bill). Many dealers initially quote the on-road price by adding insurance and RTO charges to the ex-showroom price of the vehicle. After buying the car, when we look at the bill, we see many hidden charges like file charges, service charges, handling charges and accessories charges. In total, approximately Rs 5-10 thousand in hidden charges are added. Note that service charge is illegal. If you see such charges in your bill, raise an objection immediately or make it clear to the dealer at the time of booking that you won’t pay any hidden charges.
