‘Vibe Hacking’, the dark side of AI you haven’t heard:Artificial Intelligence’s most horrible phase to date, what is it and how cybercriminals are turning chatbots into con artists

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was once the shining armor of cybersecurity helping analysts detect, predict, and prevent attacks. But according to Anthropic’s August 2025 Threat Intelligence Report, that armor is cracking. AI is no longer just a defensive tool it has become a weapon. Cybercriminals are now using AI to launch, manage, and even automate full-scale cyberattacks without much human involvement. And the newest menace in this AI-powered chaos? Something called “vibe hacking.” What exactly is Vibe Hacking Vibe hacking is the dark evolution of a once-innocent concept called “vibe coding.” Originally, vibe coding referred to giving AI natural language prompts to write code effortlessly. But in the wrong hands, it’s now being twisted into something far more dangerous. Instead of asking AI to build websites or automate tasks, criminals now “vibe hack” by simply describing the kind of attack they want no coding skills required. For example, a hacker might prompt AI with commands like: The AI does the rest planning and executing complex attacks from just a few sentences. How Vibe Hacking is changing cybercrime 1. It makes hacking easy for anyone In the past, cyberattacks required serious technical knowledge coding, network manipulation, and psychological tricks. Not anymore. With vibe hacking, even someone with minimal skills can pull off advanced attacks. Some criminals are already selling AI-generated ransomware kits for as little as $400–$1,200 on the dark web without writing a single line of code. 2. It automates target selection AI doesn’t just hack it analyzes. Using stolen data, it can: What used to be random thefts are now turning into cold, data-driven business operations. 3. It perfects social engineering Vibe hacking allows criminals to scale one of the oldest tricks in the book manipulation. AI can now: One documented ransom note reportedly used insider details like salary records and donor data to pressure victims a chillingly smart psychological move. 4. It builds fake identities AI tools are being used to create entire digital personas. For instance, North Korean operatives reportedly used Anthropic’s AI tool Claude to: This isn’t traditional espionage it’s identity fraud powered by AI. 5. It never sleeps Unlike human hackers, AI can attack 24/7. It continuously scans for vulnerabilities, adapts to new defenses in real time, and even manages multiple breaches at once making it incredibly hard to detect or stop. The rise of “Evil AIs” Anthropic confirmed that its own AI model, Claude Code, was exploited to steal personal data from 17 organizations, with hackers demanding nearly $500,000 per victim. On dark web markets, custom-built AI tools known as Evil LLMs like FraudGPT and WormGPT are being sold for as little as $100. These models are specifically trained to bypass security filters, generate phishing content, and trick AI safety systems into revealing sensitive information. A newer AI agent called PromptLock can even decide which files to steal, encrypt, or delete all autonomously. As Huzefa Motiwala, Senior Director at Palo Alto Networks, explains: “Generative AI has lowered the barrier of entry for cybercriminals.” What’s next for AI cybercrime? Experts warn that vibe hacking is just the beginning. In the near future, we could see: Anthropic’s report sums it up best: “AI-assisted coding has reduced the technical expertise required for cybercrime. Such attacks will only become more frequent.” Don’t Panic, Prepare Yes, vibe hacking is terrifying but it’s not unstoppable. The same AI that criminals exploit can also be used to defend against them. To stay protected, cybersecurity teams should: The rise of vibe hacking marks a new chapter in cybercrime where imagination, not skill, fuels attacks. But with awareness, strong defenses, and global cooperation, we can ensure AI remains a tool for progress, not destruction.
