Elon Musk’s company Starlink is going to launch its satellite broadband services in India. For this, the company will conduct a demo run in Mumbai on October 30 and 31. This is a big step for regulatory clearance to start the satellite broadband service. News agency PTI has stated in its report that provisional spectrum will be used during this demo, which has been temporarily allotted. Law enforcement agencies, meaning police and security personnel, will closely watch it. These tests will primarily focus on two things: Office’s monthly rent more than ₹3.52 lakh According to a report by Economic Times, Starlink Satellite Communications has leased 1,294 sq ft of space on the ground floor of the commercial building Boomerang in Chandivali. The lease starts from October 14 and is for 5 years. The monthly rent is more than ₹3.52 lakh and will increase by 5% every year. The company has deposited a security deposit of ₹31.7 lakh. This means the business setup is complete, and now only final approval is needed. With Starlink’s arrival, prices may decrease India’s satellite broadband market is still nascent. Companies like Jio and Airtel are also entering it, but Starlink’s technology is of global standard. Starlink’s entry into the Indian market will increase competition, may lower prices, and improve connectivity. What is Starlink and why is it special? Starlink is a SpaceX project that provides high-speed internet through satellites. Its satellites orbit close to Earth, making the internet fast and smooth.
It is especially beneficial for areas, such as villages or mountains, where conventional internet does not reach. Why did it take so long for Starlink to get a license? Starlink had been trying since 2022, but there were delays due to security concerns. The Indian government had put forward conditions like data security and call interception. Starlink accepted these conditions, and after receiving the Letter of Intent in May 2025, the license was granted. What will be the benefit for common people? Starlink will bring internet to villages and remote areas. This will promote online education, telemedicine, and business. Additionally, increased competition in the telecom market could lead to cheaper and better plans.
