Elon Musk’s latest Grok upgrade raises the AI competition bar:The AI chatbot can now turn photos into short videos, here’s how to try your hand at it

In the race to outshine AI rivals, Elon Musk’s Grok has rolled out a flashy new upgrade. Its latest tool, Grok Imagine, can bring still photos to life, turning them into short, moving clips in just seconds. The feature has quickly become a talking point online, with Musk calling it a fun new way to “create whatever you can imagine.” Grok’s new trick Musk shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), revealing that Grok users can now animate any image with a simple long press. Musk wrote: Long-press on any image to turn it into a video! Then customise the prompt to create whatever you can imagine. The feature is powered by Grok Imagine, a new image- and video-generation tool developed by his AI company, xAI. Here’s how you can try your hand at it Using the new tool is surprisingly easy: The tool uses generative AI to interpret prompts and bring creative ideas to life in motion. Available now on X and the Grok app The new image-to-video feature is rolling out to Grok users on X and through its standalone app. It’s part of Grok’s growing creative toolkit, which already includes writing help, image generation, and real-time data access. Part of Grok’s bigger expansion xAI, Musk’s AI venture, launched Grok 4 in July and made it free for all users in August (with some daily limits). Premium subscribers, however, get faster replies, longer prompts, and access to advanced “SuperGrok” modes. Recently, Musk claimed the company’s next big model, Grok 5, has a 10% and rising chance of reaching artificial general intelligence (AGI). Musk’s friendly rivalry continues In August, Musk couldn’t resist taking a jab at OpenAI after Microsoft announced deeper GPT-5 integration across its products. Musk quipped: OpenAI is going to eat Microsoft alive. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, ever the sport, responded that people had been trying that for 50 years — “and that’s the fun of it.” Grok’s new feature blurs the line between photos and videos, giving users a fun, fast way to make their creativity move.
