Now, with the paywall gone, anyone can download Comet for free at perplexity.ai/comet. What makes comet different Unlike a regular browser, Comet doubles as your AI assistant. Every new tab opens with a built-in Comet Assistant that can: Background Assistants Alongside the free launch, Perplexity introduced ‘Background Assistants’. Think of them as a personal AI team that handles tasks for you in the background. Perplexity explained: In the background, your personal team of AI assistants eliminates any task on your to-do list. The feature aims to turn curiosity into productivity by juggling multiple jobs at once. Going up against big tech The timing isn’t random. Google recently added Gemini AI into Chrome, OpenAI released its Operator tool earlier this year, and Anthropic launched its own browser-based assistant.
Perplexity even made headlines in August with its bold $34.5 billion bid to buy Chrome, a long shot, but a clear sign of its ambitions.
