India Mobile Congress 2025 Day 1 highlights:JioBharat launches phone for the elderly, Vodafone rolls out ‘Vi Protect’ to fight fraud calls and cyber threats

The India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 has officially begun, and it’s all about safety, security, and smarter connectivity.
From affordable feature phones that care for your loved ones to AI systems that fight spam calls, both Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are putting digital safety at the centre of their latest innovations. Jio’s new ‘Safety-First’ phones for Indian families Reliance Jio unveiled its JioBharat phones with ‘Safety-First’ capability, designed to help families stay connected and protected. These new feature phones come with smart security tools that let users monitor location, control calls, and even track device health, all at an affordable price starting at ₹799. According to Jio, the Safety-First solution is “built to connect, protect, and empower every Indian.” Key safety features include: Sunil Dutt, President of Reliance Jio, said: Technology should serve a deeper purpose — to connect, protect, and empower every Indian. The JioBharat Safety-First solution is more than just a feature — it’s a life-enabling innovation. The phones are available across Jio Stores, JioMart, Amazon, and Swiggy Instamart starting today. Vi Protect: AI-powered defence against spam and scams Vodafone Idea (Vi) also took the stage at IMC 2025 to announce Vi Protect, an AI-driven system designed to shield users from fraud calls, SMS scams, and cyber threats. The initiative includes two major systems: Vi says these systems have already flagged over 600 million spam and scam calls and messages, and the company plans to soon introduce real-time URL protection to block phishing links. A Vi spokesperson said the goal is to make “digital security as seamless and reliable as connectivity itself.” PM Modi: “Mobile data cheaper than a cup of tea” Inaugurating the ninth edition of IMC 2025 at New Delhi’s Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s growing dominance in the digital world. He said: India ranks among the leading nations in per-user data consumption… and mobile data here now costs less than a cup of tea. PM Modi also noted that India has become the second-largest 5G market globally, and mobile manufacturing has increased 28 times, with exports rising 127 times over the past decade.
He added that global companies, including Apple, have expanded their local supply chains, creating over 3.5 lakh jobs. The big takeaway Day one of IMC 2025 made one thing clear, India’s digital revolution is not just about faster networks or cheaper data anymore. It’s about making technology safer, more accessible, and deeply human.
